Your enamel protects your tooth
Teeth have a protective outer layer called enamel. This layer is harder than bone and protects the tooth like a helmet.
A crack in that armour leaves the tooth vulnerable to bigger issues.
This can be a chip on a tooth, a piece broken off your tooth, or even a crack that has not broken off the main part of your tooth.
Sometimes a broken filling or a filling that has fallen out can feel like a broken tooth.
You can have a chip or a break on a front tooth or a molar tooth.
|
What weakens the protective layer?
Many things can weaken enamel, such as soft drinks, cavities, tooth grinding or even certain medical conditions.
If you clench or grind your teeth in your sleep, this can weaken the enamel too.
Make sure your dentist knows about any conditions or habits so they can do things to help. |

Your teeth are hard workers
The mouth can exert up to 90kgs of pressure every time you bite.
Make sure you chew carefully and avoid biting hard, non-food items like pens and pencils.
Also avoid biting your nails if you can, and resist the temptation to chew on ice cubes! |
Do cracked teeth hurt? Cracked teeth can be sensitive to hot and cold, and may cause pain when biting.
However, cracked teeth don’t always hurt or become sensitive to temperature. Our team will be able to advise you, to help you choose the appropriate treatment.
If left untreated, the crack may get worse, the tooth may develop further decay and nerve infections. This worsening can sometimes progress without causing any pain or sensitivity. |
